Richard Harris...what happened to him was awful. And to be honest, I think that Ian McKellen would have done a much better job as a second Dumbledore, but he did say in that interview that he didn't want to 'overdo' it as an old guy that does magic. Lol! =D OH MY GOD I THOUGHT THE SAME THING! Ian McKellen is Gandalf in the LOTR trilogy right??? I would MUCH have rathered seen him than Michael Gambon. Not saying that he's not a great actor, he definately is, but he just doesnt cut it for me as Dumbledore. I remember when I first started reading the books, I pictured Dumbledore almost EXACTLY as Richard Harris.... Dina, what happened to Richard Harris. I know he died, but never got any details....

I liked Richard, he was more Grandfatherly but then again I really couldn't imagine him doing the stunts in the 5th or 6th film.
According to an interview with Ian he didn't take the role because Richard had said something bad about him and he didn't feel it was right to take over the role. Plus the whole stereotype thing.
Oh and Richard died of Hodgkin's disease.

what's Hodgkin's disease? I just watched the 2nd movie today and i don't know if it was just me....but he seemed almost weaker in that movie. Wonder how soon after that movie he died. It's really sad He was perfect.

i like Michael Gambon - no disrespect to Richard Harris. somehow, Michael seems the way i always thought Dumbledore SHOULD be; full of engry. yeah, MG makes a better Dumbledore for me - RIP Richard Harris

Richard Harris did die of Hodgkin's disease, he also used to drink a lot. I had a magazine article about it somewhere, I'll try and find it. He was weaker in the second film because that's when the disease really took over and he was so ill a double had to be used for some scenes. I applaud him for that. I mean, a lot of people would be all, "You know what? I can't do this. I don't feel well. I'm pulling out of the film." I think it was really valiant of Richard to film the whole movie when he was so sick. RIP Richard Harris

RIP. <3 i agree. Richard didn't have to film HP CoS when he was so sick but, he done it anyway. i think he was determinded that the illness wasn't going to affect his role as Dumbledore. in fact, i think he would have said "scew this! i am not going to let this affect ANY of my projects" - that would have been my attitude. R.I.P Richard Harris - the first Dumbledore
