That's not what I was taught. Joli without an e is talking about a guy. With an e is talking about a girl. Just like Vous etes is formal/talking to more than one, and Tu as is informal

you don't call a boy pretty, you say 'Le garcon est beau. '
Beau meaning handsome

I know what beau means. I take French and I have for two and a half years. And you CAN call a guy pretty, it's just not grammatically proper. Just like in English you can call a guy pretty. I'm just saying that most words that have an e added, the word without the e means you're talking to a boy.

well I call Scott pretty, but he'd kill me if I said 'joli' in any connection to him.. Exactly. You see, you CAN call boys pretty. It's just proper to call them handsome. That's why the word "joli" is uncommonly used unless it is talking about a masculine object. "Joli e" is used when talking to girls.

what ever Laura, you know all so you must be correct. it's Joli, Kellie dear, beau for a male. I'm just telling you what the hell you're doing wrong with the language. Jolie is for girls. Joli is used for a masculine object. The additions of e's to feminine words is one of the first things you learn.
